Energy Insiders Podcast: Does demand response spell the end for dirty peakers?

Demand response was considered a smart and cheaper alternative to switching on expensive diesel and peaking gas generators nearly two decades ago.

Finally, after years of resistance from incumbent utilities, it will now become a thing, after the Australian Energy Market Commission issued a draft ruling that could help re-shape electricity markets.

But has the AEMC got it right? Craig Memery, a policy expert from the Public Interest Advocacy Centre, who helped push for the rule change, joins the Energy Insiders podcast to talk through the proposals, where it succeeds and where it fails.

You can also check out some other opinion published today, from Bruce Mountain and GFG Alliance’s Simon Camroux.

Also, we discuss the news of the week, and in particular the Queensland government’s shortlist for their renewable energy and storage auction. It has taken so long that a major component of one of the shortlisted projects has already been built!
