Daimler AG, in conjunction with its subsidiary Deutsche ACCUMOTIVE, has begun deliveries of its first home energy storage systems, following months of successful commercial deliveries.

The lithium-ion, battery-based home energy storage units — which are being manufactured by Deutsche ACCUMOTIVE — are based on the technologies developed for use in electric Mercedes-Benz vehicles.

The new home energy storage units are currently available via a Germany-wide network of sales partners and distributors — which includes the energy service provider Energie Baden-Württemberg (EnBW), the solar technology specialist SMA, and others.

“There is tremendous interest in our energy storage units and we have already received numerous orders. Over the coming months, we will continue to step up and expand sales both in Germany and on the international market,” commented Harald Kröger, the Head of Development Electrics/Electronics and E-Drive Mercedes-Benz Cars.

The press release from Daimler provides more information:

Their network of qualified specialist installers take care of providing the end customers with on-site advice, planning, compiling an individual quotation for all components and the actual installation. Stationary battery storage units are generally installed together with a photovoltaic system. Some 500 installers throughout Germany have already undergone training in collaboration with the partners.

…Up to eight battery modules with an energy content of 2.5 kWh each can be combined to produce an energy storage unit with a capacity of up to 20 kWh. Households with their own photovoltaic systems can therefore buffer surplus solar power with virtually no losses. By combining renewable energy sources with a local battery storage unit, private households can increase their self-consumption of generated energy to as much as 65%, thereby bringing about their own “private energy revolution”.

The retail price for home electricity generation is calculated based on a customized package of system components. These may comprise the photovoltaic system, battery inverter, energy management and the Mercedes-Benz energy storage unit, plus the cost of installation.

Kröger added: “We can count on the support of expert partners for our sales of the Mercedes-Benz energy storage units. The ideal contact for the end customer is their local electrical specialist. We are convinced we can offer our customers an attractive product at a competitive price.”

    To start is Mercedes-home memory work with an additional battery inverters from SMA. About the possibility that the battery is working with other inverter manufacturers, nothing has yet been known.

    It’s interesting to me that they are taking the anti-SolarCity tact in distributing their product. That is, instead of being vertically integrated they are going to tie into the existing network of electricians and contractors to install and help market their product(s) just like we do with all the other systems in people’s houses. I think this is smart. A lot of these systems are going to go in when people build or remodel their houses, particularly in the US where there is low-cost financing for people’s houses. Architects and engineers will be spec’ing these systems like they spec mechanical systems now.

    I think there might be a great add-on business in this new environment of self-generation and self-storage: All these systems are DC, as are all of the LED lights and phone chargers, car chargers, etc. At some point it’s going to get a lot easier and cheaper to switch the whole house over to DC. So there’ll be a market for an entire DC house system and associated appliances and fixtures.
