After 8.3 million page views in 2017, we’re taking a short break

Screen Shot 2017-12-21 at 8.55.41 am
This has been an extraordinarily successful year for RenewEconomy, as readers flocked to our website to share our excitement over new energy technologies, and our despair at some of the same old energy politics.

The number of page views in 2017 is up an astonishing 45 per cent to 8.3 million page views (so far), from 5.7 million in 2016 – taking our total to 26.5 million page views since we were established in 2012.

RenewEconomy has 15,000 subscribers to its daily newsletter, who on average check in every 2 days, a very high engagement rate for a daily niche publication.

We have a broader “core audience” of nearly 50,000 that visits the site at least once a week, and another 2.3 million who checked in from time to time in 2017.

Many of these one or two-timers were attracted to “hot” articles, like the response to our story on autonomous driving and car ownership, “Death spiral for cars: By 2030, you probably won’t own one”, which remains our most read story of the year.

Tesla also dominated attention, from the Powerwall to the Tesla truck, and then to the Tesla big battery, and this story Tesla big battery outsmarts lumbering coal units after Loy Yang trips and others that led to a day of record page views and visits on Wednesday this week.

It was a nice way to end the year. (See Sophie’s story for more on the most read articles of 2017).

2017 also saw the launch our two podcast series – Energy Insiders and Solar Insiders – which have drawn a huge response, and great feedback from people within and without the industry who like the chatty format and the great interviews.

On behalf of RenewEconomy, I’d like to thank all our readers for their support and for their engagement with the team and the website.

We’ve had 70,000 comments on our stories. And there is nothing so gratifying as to be told at a conference or event, or simply while sitting in a cafe (usually on the laptop) that our work is valued and appreciated.

I’d also like to thank our sponsors and advertisers – the repeat customers and the new ones – our conference partner (Informa), and to the many, many people who kindly made a donation to RenewEconomy, which remains a freely-accessible site, to help make sure we can make ends meet.

And I’d like to thank the crew who put RenewEconomy together each day – Sophie, Sam and Emilie – along with regulator contributors David, Nigel and Anne, and the many others who provided articles, ideas, story tips, corrections and advice.

Resized_20171005_214013We’re taking a break and will be back in January. We hope we don’t miss too much fun. We look forward to your support again in 2018, and wish you the best for the holiday season.

Renew is one of only a very few RSS feeds for me, and it’s my outstanding favourite! Hoping you hard workers have a lovely break, I’ll miss reading up over the next week or so (when are you back?).

2018 promises to be even more fascinating than 2017 in the renewables space, with the number of storage options increasing, as their prices decrease.

Awesome work Giles and the team. The website is essential reading and the two podcasts are essential listening. The battle for a smart, sustainable, sane future would be so much harder without you.

Jack, I totally agree with you. RenewEconomy is part of my essential daily reading. Not only am I much better informed because of the work of Giles and the team, but I also receive some hope that there may be a way through our current predicament to a truly sustainable future.

Thanks Giles. I usually read a couple of items each day and have listened to a number of podcasts. You are an important source of reliable information concerning the most important issues facing the planet. Have a great break.

Yep with more than a thousand interesting websites to visit (information overload!) this here one is by far one of the more interesting (and local btw!) websites, and also very technical and logical …. and economically minded. And indeed tunes the saving grace that the goddamn planet needs to heal itself from a few major pollution ills atm.

I completely get the logic, the care, the energy, the humanity! That’s why I come back and read this site day after day.

Anyway Merry Christmas to you too.

Massive thanks for providing an excellent source of reliable information in the renewables sphere. Absolutely essential reading given the lies, ignorance and propaganda which dominate the renewable energy transition debate. Enjoy a well earned break.

Enjoy your well earned break, Giles and crew. Your contributions help the rest of us make sense of the existing energy mess and failures of government policy. You give us ammunition to wage war on the lies we hear. I, for one, am very grateful.

Many thanks Giles, for all your hard graft. We shared some exciting stories and I loved every article. Well done to all at RE and have a safe and Merry Christmas.

May the sun shine on your PV.

    Cheers.

Yes, and thanks to you and the crew… for the stamina, not to despair given the idiots we call leaders in this country… Keep up the good work and keep your sanity, as it can be draining or frustrating listening and enduring the manure from the neoliberals, cronies, and corporations and their spin. Have nice break, and forget about it all, albeit for only a few weeks 🙂

How do you, Giles and company, manage this pace? I can’t keep up. Have a great break, and looking forward to your return. The world really needs you.

If only those responsible for energy and environmental policy in this country would take their daily guidance from RenewEconomy, instead of waiting to be dragged kicking and screaming into the future. I share with other commenters the awe at how Giles and colleagues can assemble such valuable info 5 days a week, 50 weeks a year. Congrats and a most hearty thanks Giles, Sophie and team.

Keep up the great work Giles, Sophie, Sam and Emilie. It is the only news site I consistently read mainly due to the integrity/trustworthiness of the reports and the normally excellent quality of the comments especially when technical issues are explained in more depth.

It is a very important site to counter balance all the misinformation/fake news propagated by main stream media and even the ABC now. Hope you have a decent list of Journalists using Reneweconomy as a starting point to get their head around energy issues.

You certainly earned the audience, as well as the break!

Going forward, I wonder if RenewEconomy could become a platform for coordination among technologies and stakeholders, as well as education? One possible application could be a set of tools for consumers to use to collaborate to estimate what a microgrid for their city block, neighborhood or community might look like, research the options, home in on what they need to include in a Request For Proposals, vet those proposals, make decisions, act, measure, report, and choose what to do next.

On the other hand, each level of suppliers (e.g. contractors, distributors,, wholesalers, manufacturers) could be organized and facing collectively in two directions, toward their supply chain and toward their marketing channels, with visibility all the way to the ends of the chains.

That could be incredibly powerful in mobilizing everyone who supports clean energy and resilience to climate and other types of disruptions (including gaming by incumbents who have been abusing their customers with extortionate pricing).

It could move the discussions in your Comments sections from just communication, to mobilization and strategic planning in the whole domain and all its parts.

By the way, I spotted this and thought it may give a certain perspective on (and to?) the Australian media who should be following you:
    http://thehill.com/homenews/administration/366335-trump-called-murdoch-to-make-sure-disney-deal-wouldnt-affect-fox-news
“The president spoke with Rupert Murdoch earlier today ….
    (snip)
“The pair reportedly talk on the phone once a week, according to the Times.”
