WA looks to solar + wind + storage for largest edge-of-grid microgrid

Western Power looks to build microgrid with wind, solar and storage to cut network costs and improve reliability in a town north of Perth.

The West Australian government has announced it will spend $300,000 on a feasibility study for the creation of the country’s biggest edge-of-grid solution – a renewables-based micro grid to cut costs and improve energy security.

The announcement from WA energy minister Mike Nahan is expected to be the first of a number of such initiatives as the grid operator, Western Power, looks to micro-grids to reduce massive costs and cross-subsidies to service remote areas.

This micro-grid study will centre on the town of Kalbarri, some 140kms north of Geraldton, whose grid connection is frequently interrupted by wind-blown salt and dust.

The area has 2,000 customers and a daily energy peak of 3.7MW.

“The Kalbarri microgrid will be an important test for applying technology in an innovative way to improve electricity supply for regional communities while using the network more sustainably and affordably,” Dr Nahan said in a statement.

“This is a model that could be used as a blueprint for other regional areas and help in the development of further renewable generation across the rural edges of the electricity network.”


The study is expected to take six months to complete, will focus on using wind energy and solar power, and adding battery storage. The area already has a small, two-turbine wind farm with a capacity of 1.6MW.

It will retain the link to the main grid, but will consider the best way to supply the town and push excess power down the line. When stored energy was insufficient to meet demand it would be able to draw from the grid, and also have the ability to disconnect from the larger network should a fault occur.

The contract has been offered to listed company Enerji.

Western Power CEO Paul Italiano told WA Business News that micro-grids offer a cost-effective solution and this project could provide a template for other areas.

“We think there are great opportunities for us to learn lessons at Kalbarri that we can apply to other parts of the network,” he said, adding that the trial could provide an economic model that could be replicated elsewhere.

Dr Nahan said the Kalbarri energy project is one of a number of innovative projects to more efficiently and reliably supply electricity to rural and isolated communities.

Other projects include Western Power’s development of a microgrid on Garden Island in partnership with Carnegie Wave Energy, and its standalone power projects in the Great Southern and southern Wheatbelt, in partnership with Synergy and Horizon Power.

    Back to the future! The early investment in the wind turbines in Kalbarri was a forward looking initiative by the state owned utility that has unfortunately languished for too long under political leadership hostile to further development. This is a great example of the use of a state owned utility developing a strategic generation/storage based solution to a network problem, and the minister should be congratulated for supporting it.

    Kalbarri is a holiday destination with seasonal load profile heavy with air conditioning and refrigeration type loads – so energy efficiency and thermal load shifting (or storage) would also be sensibly considered with these supply side options.

    I dealt with Enerji some years back. The method of doing business was despicable and their technology wildly unreliable and risky. I note they have changed their Chairman and Executive team since then so good luck to them on this project.
