New renewable energy apps to find stats and wind resources

images-18IRENA has come up with a truly amazing app for global renewable energy statistics and information. In addition, an Italian has released an app that helps you find wind farms worldwide.

Add yet another interesting publication from the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) to your list, this time an app. The Global Renewable Energy Atlas is available not only on iOS and Android, but also Blackberry and Windows Phone.

I have only just started looking through it, and it is amazingly comprehensive. For instance, it includes data for wind velocities and insolation so you can get a quick overview of areas and compare them. IRENA gets the data from official government maps and sources.

The Wind Farm Locator is available for iOS and Android. It allows you to zoom in on particular wind projects and get the specific data, such as total installed capacity. I imagine it being quite useful if you are traveling and want to identify a wind farm nearby.

The creator of the app, Francesco Paraggio, says he is also open to input from the public to improve the data set. Again, I haven’t used the app that much yet, but it does correctly identify the six windmills I can see out the window of my office. If you notice anything that needs improving, you can contact him on Twitter.
