Mingyang debuts two-headed wind turbine on floating offshore platform

Chinese wind turbine manufacturer Mingyang Smart Energy has completed construction of a twin-rotor floating wind turbine platform dubbed OceanX, which features two turbines on a V-shaped platform with a total capacity of 16.6GW.

Mingyang announced the milestone on its English-language LinkedIn page, describing OceanX as “the world’s largest single-capacity floating wind turbine platform”.

The OceanX platform has supposedly been designed for deep water applications and is capable of producing 54 million kWh of electricity each year. This is, unsurprisingly, the world’s first offshore wind platform capable of hosting two turbine rotors.

The twin-rotor turbine platform was assembled at dock in Guangzhou, China, and consists of MySE8.3-180 super compact hybrid drive wind turbines attached to a V-shaped tower. According to Mingyang, the long and elliptical cross-sections of the V-shaped tower provide “additional yawing power” helping to enhance production efficiency and reducing ultimate load, “especially in extreme typhoon conditions.”

Construction at dock moves OceanX an important step closer to an eventual installation at sea.
