Vestas 15MW turbine breaks 24-hour wind power generation record

A new 15MW offshore wind turbine prototype built by Danish manufacturer Vestas Wind Systems has set a new world record for most power output generated over 24 hours.

Vestas’ new V236-15.0MW prototype offshore wind turbine is currently being put through an extensive testing and verification programme at the Østerild National test centre for large wind turbines in Denmark.

Boasting a swept area of 43,742 metres-squared and a capacity factor of over 60% from the 115.5m blades, Vestas says it had set a new world record for most power output over 24 hours of 363MWh.

Vestas takes the record from its Spanish-German competitor Siemens Gamesa, which set the previous record of 359MWh in October of 2022.

“Seven months into testing, we are excited to see the performance of the turbine at full power at continuously high wind,” said Jesper Uth, Vestas’ senior director of test & validation.

“The verification campaign will continue to achieve the type certification and further demonstrate what a high-quality machine can deliver over time.”
