The booming and hyper-competitive home battery market has a new number one brand, with China-based Fox ESS claiming highest installed storage capacity (kilowatt-hours) in Australia after installing more than 12,000 systems in February.
The new milestone, based on the latest monthly data gathered by industry analyst SunWiz, was heralded by Fox ESS on LinkedIn on Thursday, complete with the company’s Olympian brand ambassador, and backed up with a media release.
The company says its success in Australia has not come from “a single burst,” but rather builds on a global foundation, with the S&P Global Energy Residential Energy Storage Index ranking Fox ESS as leading market share in the UK, Poland and other parts of Europe.
“A longstanding leader in the UK and German markets, Fox ESS has rapidly established itself as a leading force in Australia’s energy storage sector,” SunWiz managing director Warwick Johnston said in a statement on Thursday.
“Their competitively-priced solution and international leadership are clearly resonating with both installers and consumers, and the February results reflect their strong and growing position in the Australian market.”
The ascendancy of Fox ESS nudges aside fellow China giant SigEnergy – and seems to come as much out of the blue as SigEnergy did in 2025 when it burst to the top of the Australian battery charts.
The big difference is that Fox ESS offers battery products that sit down the lower-cost end of the scale.
A review on Solar Quotes by the website’s founder Finn Peacock notes that the batteries have been “selling like hot cakes, due to their stackable design and low price,” but also notes that there is not enough data yet to “form an opinion on their quality or robustness in harsh Australian conditions.”
There is no shortage of reports from consumers via Reddit and other social media platforms that households are being quoted just under $7,000 out-of-pocket for a 42 kWh Fox ESS battery system once the discount from the full original federal rebate is factored in.
For its part, Fox ESS says it is pursuing a long-term strategy to support its growth in Australia, including building a 30-person service team based across two offices, in Melbourne and Sydney.
