In a world first on Thursday 14 March 2019, Australian Carbon Credit Units (ACCU’s) were issued to reward a Farmer in Victoria for increasing the Carbon in his Soil. In another world first on the same day, Carbon Farmers of Australia bought 10 of these units at a price of $100 each.
When asked why such a high price for Carbon, Louisa Kiely (Director of Carbon Farmers of Australia) said, “We have always maintained Soil Carbon was ‘gourmet’ Carbon. Carbon Sequestration back into soil is the only climate change mitigation effort which can also provide food security, and allow farmers to meet the drought challenges.”
“We have maintained a carbon price of $25 will begin to open the potential of the soils, but as the first to be issued these are unique and our offer reflected this reality.”
