Rooftop solar sales rebound as households brace for another power price shock

Published by

After hitting a 12-month low in April, installations of rooftop solar systems have rebounded in May, jumping by around 30 per cent and charting the largest monthly total of new capacity added for the year to date.

According to the latest data from industry statistician SunWiz, Australian homes and businesses installed a total of 270MW of rooftop PV in May, a 64MW increase on the 206MW installed over April.

SunWiz managing director Warwick Johnston says market volumes are now above the 12-month straight-line trend, which is still up, and 22% ahead of volumes seen at the same time last year.

“All states observed a large increase in volumes notably New South Wales, Queensland and Victoria improved by 37%, 26% and 31%; respectively,” Johnston says.

“These major states contributed the most to the ~30% M-o-M national increase.”

Johnston says all of the different rooftop PV segment sizes also increased over the course of May, with the largest jumps in the commercial 30-100kW range.

This resulted in average rooftop system sizes continuing to increase for the third month in a row to an average of 9.3kW.
