$150,000 in community grants to help progress towards zero emissions

A second round of grants to support non-profit organisations and individuals to undertake innovative projects to reduce greenhouse gas emissions was announced today by Minister for Climate Change and Sustainability Shane Rattenbury.

“The inaugural round of the ACT Community Zero Emissions Grants Program was a success last year with a range of projects supported which engage the community to reduce emissions through behaviour change, sustainable building techniques, composting, recycling and transport,” Mr Rattenbury said.

“The latest round of grants will again enable non-profit organisations and individuals to apply for up to $25,000 in funding with a total of $150,000 available this coming financial year.

“The ACT is leading the nation putting in place ambitious clean energy and zero net emission targets. Our recent community engagement on the development of the ACT’s next climate change strategy saw a high level of interest from Canberrans, with over 900 people contributing to forums and polls and the website receiving over 2500 individual visitors.

“We are fortunate to live in a community which is coming up with innovative ideas to transform Canberra into a more sustainable city across the energy, transport, building and waste sectors.

“These grants help us to work alongside our community to reduce our emissions and inspire changes in the way we think about the environmental impact of our city and our everyday behaviours.

“Last year’s grants supported projects ranging from a solar-powered composter for apartment dwellers through to training for young people to fix and build bikes for disadvantaged community members. I’m looking forward to seeing the new ideas presented in the next round of proposals,” Mr Rattenbury said.
