Dice Australia and AllGrid Energy are hosting a fund-raising event for Indigenous wellbeing and Suicide Prevention. The event is on the evening of the 25th of October. Dr. David Suzuki will be giving a keynote address and the evening will be opened by Sydney’s Lord Mayor, Clover Moore. The feature of the night is an illuminating panel discussion amongst a group of Indigenous leaders and climate champions about inspiring and innovative strategies for community regeneration and healing.
All proceeds are donated to community groups dedicated to researching, developing and implementing programs to improve mental health in Indigenous communities and reduce suicide rates. Proceeds are generated through ticket salesand our donations page.
We are motivated to host this event because we have projects underway in communities where are seeing first-hand the impacts of these issues. Our recent work in a community in the Barkly Tablelands in Northern Territory has seen nearly 40 people be able to return to their homes, a school set up and 2 people from the community take up teaching positions in the school.
All Grid Energy’s CEO Ray Pratt has said that “although we are a wealthy first world country, in many remote communities, Indigenous people are living in third world conditions. We know that energy poverty is a significant factor in community well-being” Innovative solutions that integrate environmentally friendly technology will foster community regeneration and individual well-being.
Allgrid Energy have recently partnered with Alpha Technologies to implement satellite internet communication systems in communities we are at work in. This will facilitate access to schooling and other on-line services. We see that empowering communities from within with affordable clean power and communications is essential in their regeneration processes.
The fund-raising is for the University of Newcastle’s Centre for Rural and Remote Mental Health (CRRMH), specifically for their work in Aboriginal suicide prevention. CRRMH have developed an evidence-based suicide prevention workshop, in consultation with Aboriginal communities. The workshop aims to address the high rates of suicide in Aboriginal communities and is co-facilitated by a local Aboriginal person. The CRRMH has just completed the pilot phase of the program with evaluation ongoing. It is the goal of the CRRMH to continue to expand this work – large-scale delivery of the workshop to achieve maximum reach and impact, while maintaining consultation and community involvement practices.
