University of Queensland offer free course to combat climate denial

fb-ogimage-uqThe University of Queensland is offering a free course to arm people with the necessary tools to understand and combat climate skepticism.

The course, called “Making Sense of Climate Denial”, will start next week, and is free and entirely online.

University of Queensland Global Change Institute climate communication fellow John Cook is the course coordinator as well as founder of the climate science myth debunking website Skeptical Science.

“Ninety-seven per cent of climate scientists agree that humans are causing global warming; however, less than half of Australians are aware of humanity’s role in climate change, while half of the US Senate has voted that humans aren’t causing global warming,” Cook said.

“This free course explains why there is such a huge gap between the scientific community and the public. Our course looks at what’s driving climate science denial and the most common myths about climate change.”

The open online course (MOOC) will examine issues such as the gap between public and scientists, the psychological and social drivers of the rejection of scientific consensus, and how climate denial has influenced public perceptions and attitudes towards climate change.

Over seven weeks, students will have access to interviews with 75  scientific experts, including Sir David Attenborough.

Students  from over 130 countries who are keen to develop a stronger understanding of climate science, have already enrolled for the course. It’s not clear if any Abbott government ministers were among them.

I would expect that zero ministers in the present government and quiet a few from the last would enrol.
However that aside it is really sad that a University has to do a course on human survival in the long term and dress it up as Climate Transition and reasons for it.
I just made that up but I expect that is what the course will be about.
Having a dialogue with people over seas I am amazed at the total misunderstand that is so apparent in the USA honestly it is really a dismal outlook when the most powerful country in the world has people that are so poor informed.

John Cook repeats the often quoted, “Ninety-seven per cent of climate scientists agree that humans are causing global warming.”

Where does this 97% come from?? I have never heard a peer reviewed climate scientist say that humans are NOT causing global warming!!

It would be more accurate to say that, “100 per cent of climate scientists agree that humans are causing global warming”.

yeah… but does he realize that he is on the side of the church against gallileo (who went against the consensus), the side of bloodletting (which was so dense that patients died from it and they did not stop), the side of Trophim Lysenko, who used the states power to force consensus….

there is no such thing as consensus in science…
newton had it before einstein took it

the miasma theory was consensus until Girolamo Fracastoro and other skeptics showed germ theory to be right…

this list can be huge… but in every case on it, the consensus was wrong

You don’t need to convince the majority of the population, only the legislators that’s why it is so easy for the wealthy to get their own way, you need hardline, in your face facts that cannot be tweaked, jerked or stretched, the population like the sheep they are will follow the countries leaders into the pits of hell if they are told it’s their best option, you cannot convince the politicians to change anything through the population unless you can get 1/2 a million people marching in the streets of every capitol city demanding change, just look at our political history, all politicians of all ideologies have followed their master $$$$ unless they faced massive defeat at the polls, even then they have been reluctant.

Idea is great , but I’m not sure that we need a free course to be armed with the necessary tools to understand and combat climate skepticism. There are so many interesting things to learn about. Also, according to Aussie Essay Writer, many people can’t compose good papers on their own, so it’s be good idea to offer creative writing course. Originally students of all academic levels have to compose essays and this skill will be very useful in the future. It is important to know how to write something and convince someone that you know what you are talking about, show that you can string together ideas with some semblance of logic and coherency
