Turbine giant lands contract for Australia’s biggest wind project in two years, its second deal in two days

Published by

Danish wind turbine manufacturing giant Vestas announced on Wednesday that it has landed a contract to supply turbines to the biggest wind project to begin construction in Australia in more than two years.

The deal was announced by Vestas in an end-of-quarter announcement of supply deals totalling 99 wind turbines and capacity of 614 megawatts (MW) for two wind farms in Western Australia.

The first contract – for 21 of its V162-6.2 MW wind turbines – was announced earlier on Wednesday when Foresight Group announced it had reached financial close for the 130 MW Kondinin wind farm.

Vestas also announced that it will be supplying 78 of its V162-6.2 MW turbines to the Parron Maam Marang wind farm being developed in partnership between Atmos Renewables and Parron Developments.

The 484 MW wind farm, the biggest wind farm to begin construction in over two years, has already secured a long-term power purchase agreement (PPA) with WA state-owned gentailer Synergy. Atmos has yet to announced financial close of that project, although it is believed to be close and last week signed a construction deal with Genus.

Together with the Warradarge, Warradarge 2, King Rocks, and Waddi wind energy projects – all of which Vestas has supplied turbines for – the new projects will continue to strengthen Western Australia’s energy security and support affordable electricity.

“Australia is a key market for Vestas, and these projects underline how our EnVentus wind turbine technology is ideally suited to meet our customers’ needs and make a strong contribution to the country’s rapidly advancing energy transition.” said Purvin Patel, regional president for the Asia Pacific region at Vestas.

Work at the Waddi and Narrogin wind projects in Western Australia have already begun, while the first turbine deliveries have been made to Kings Rocks, and the last turbine was recently completed at the expansion of the Warradarge wind farm.
