Swedish renewables developer takes ownership of giant wind and battery project in W.A.

Swedish renewable energy developer OX2 has taken ownership of a massive wind and battery storage project in Western Australia, finally revealing the identify of the asset that it first flagged more than a year ago.

The Dinner Hill project, located around two hours north of Perth, plans to combine a 1.2-gigawatt (GW) wind farm complemented by a 100-megawatt (MW) / 400-megawatt hour (MWh) battery energy storage system (BESS).

OX2 announced in October of 2024 that it had acquired an unnamed onshore wind power project in Australia with a planned total installed capacity of up to 1 GW, which would also include a battery energy storage system.

The original project developers were not named, but OX2 said they planned to “continue to manage the approval process, as part of the acquisition.”

Fast-forward to this week and OX2 announced that it had taken formal ownership of the now named Dinner Hill Wind Farm which it would progress alongside the Harvest BESS, the name of the battery.

Both projects are expected to connect to the South West Interconnected System (SWIS) electricity grid through separate transmission lines within the project area, with the Harvest BESS expected to enter operations in 2029 and the Dinner Hill Wind Farm in 2032.

“These Western Australia projects demonstrate our long-term commitment to Australia’s renewable energy growth and to delivering sustainable benefits for local communities,” said Stephen Symons, vice president of OX2 Australia.

“The Dinner Hill Wind Farm and Harvest BESS will contribute to the state’s energy transition and regional economic development through local investment and jobs during construction and operations.”

OX2 is still waiting on environmental and heritage approvals for both projects, but is nevertheless currently undertaking community engagement, including local meetings next week where the OX2 team will speak directly with local community members, residents, and Traditional Owners.

The events will be held at the Badgingarra Community Centre on Friday 28 November between 2 and 6pm, and during the Badgingarra Christmas Markets on Sunday 30 November between 10am and 2pm.

Acquisition of the Dinner Hill Wind Farm marks OX2’s first onshore wind project in Australia, coming two years after its entry into Australia and building on a pipeline of over 3 GW of renewable energy and storage projects in Victoria, New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia, and Western Australia.
