“State-of-the-art facility” wins funds to service and refurbish wind turbines on Australian soil

The Western Australian government announced Tuesday it will invest $500,000 into local family-owned electric motor specialist National Electric Motor Services to help support the delivery of a state-of-the-art wind energy manufacturing facility in Malaga.

Government funding will come from the state’s Wind Energy Manufacturing Co-Investment Program, which was launched in December of 2024 to enhance the state’s manufacturing capabilities within the wind energy supply chain.

Operating in partnership with the Advanced Manufacturing Growth Centre (AMGC), the $8 million program provides expert advice and joint funding to improve capacity and capability.

National Electric Motor Services (NEMS) will use the $500,000 to refurbish and service wind turbine generators locally at the new Malaga facility, which is hoped will reduce reliance on international service providers and improve turnaround times for wind farm operators who currently must ship repair work overseas.

Specifically, the funding will help NEMS expand its current capabilities to heavy lifting and handling, automated high-capacity testing, thermal processing, and advanced quality assurance systems for the wind energy sector.

“This is fantastic news for Malaga and the surrounding community, with a local business expanding its capabilities and creating more opportunities for skilled jobs right here in our suburbs,” said Rita Saffioti, representative for West Swan.

“NEMS is an important local business, and this investment will help it grow into a state-of-the-art facility servicing the wind energy sector.

“As WA’s wind energy industry continues to grow, we want more of the jobs, skills and economic opportunities that come with it to be created here in WA and this project is a great example of that in action.”

The Wind Energy Manufacturing Co-Investment Program has so far provided over $5.5 million in co-investment funding, helping to stimulate investment of more than $14 million into the local wind energy sector.

Previous recipients of the program are Australian Winders, Turbine Solutions, RCR Mining Technologies, and CamCo Engineering.

“We’ve invested more than $5.5 million in the local renewable sector through the Wind Energy Manufacturing Co-Investment program, stimulating more than $14 million in investment,” said Amber-Jade Sanderson, state minister for manufacturing.

“This program is about putting WA first and supporting our growing wind energy sector, while creating quality local manufacturing jobs.”
