Iron Mountain Incorporated, a global data storage and information management company, announced this week that its Data Centre business is now 100% powered by renewable electricity thanks to a newly signed 15-year PPA.
The new 15-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) was signed with NJR Clean Energy Ventures for electricity generated from its Ringer Hill Wind Farm, completed late-last year. The 39.9 megawatt (MW) wind farm is located in Somerset County, Pennsylvania, and consists of 14 GE wind turbines. Iron Mountain has purchased 25 MW of the wind farm’s capacity, serving its three Pennsylvania data centers.
It was only last October that Iron Mountain signed another PPA to secure enough renewable energy to power 30% of its US operations with electricity purchased from the Amazon Wind Farm Texas.
“One of the first challenges of our sustainable energy strategy is finding ways to beat the conventional wisdom that growing our business means bigger environmental impacts,” said Kevin Hagen, director of corporate responsibility at Iron Mountain. “Our renewable energy initiatives are a great example of adopting innovative ways to serve customers with better, financially attractive solutions that can reduce our climate and environmental impacts at the same time.”
“As our data center business grows, we’re always looking at how best to address power considering it’s the largest operational cost and environmental concern,” added Mark Kidd, senior vice president and general manager, Iron Mountain Data Centers.
“Locking in a long-term, reliable and renewable energy supply ensures price stability and cost control, delivering savings back to both Iron Mountain and our customers. Sourcing 100 percent renewable power, along with our Better Buildings Initiative pledge to reduce energy intensity across the data center portfolio, positions Iron Mountain and our customers to meet the growing demand for data center services with affordable, clean, sustainable power.”
