Greenleaf signs up Spanish group for 166MW Queensland wind farm

A new, up to 166MW wind farm is in the works for Queensland’s North Burnett region, with Australian developer Greenleaf Renewables bringing Spain-based wind specialist Enerfin on board for the project.

The up to 23 turbine Stony Creek Wind Farm, proposed for development west of Biggenden, is currently seeking federal Environment Protection Biodiversity Conservation approvals, which Greenleaf hopes to secure later this year.

Greenleaf director Tim Gregson says Enerfin – a subsidiary of Spanish infrastructure giant Elecnor – has “the experience and expertise” to help deliver the project.

It will be just the second local wind project for Enerfin Australia, following the development of the 194MW Bulgana wind project in Victoria, completed in 2019 under the ownership of Neoen.

Greenleaf, meanwhile, has this year formed a separate partnership with the renewable energy arm of Canadian investment giant Brookfield, to co-develop a range of projects along Australia’s east coast, focusing on wind and energy storage.

The first of these is the 400MW Moonlight Range wind farm, which is in the development phase in Greenleaf’s pipeline of projects. The wind farm, which will include energy storage, is targeting 2025 construction.

“The ongoing partnership we have established with Brookfield Renewable is a great validation of our business and the Australian renewables market,” Gregson said in April.

Brookfield’s collaboration with Greenleaf was announced days after Brookfield announced it had sealed the deal to buy Origin, landing funding and a board agreement, setting in motion plans for a $20 billion plus splurge on Australian renewables and storage assets.
