Construction of the 228-megawatt (MW) Boulder Creek wind project in Central Queensland, one of two new projects that have begun this year, is ramping up, with significant activity across the site including concrete foundation pours and construction of the switching station.
Aula Energy, which was established by Australian finance giant Macquarie in 2023, published a brief update on its LinkedIn account on Wednesday, noting a number recent milestones.
These include “turbine foundation pours, ongoing trenching and cable laying works, continued progress on the switching station, and the construction of new access roads to support the next stages of delivery.”
Aula Energy announced financial close of the project back in September 2024, and now owns all the project after state owned utility CS Energy sold its stake, part of the state’s general retreat from renewable energy investments. The wind farm still has an offtake agreement with CS Energy.
Located 40 km southwest of Rockhampton in Central Queensland and consisting of 38 wind turbines, the project is being built on land primarily used for cattle grazing, which is expected to continue during the project’s construction and operation.
Once fully operational, the project will generate clean energy equivalent to the power needs of over 85,000 homes, offsetting 379,000 tonnes of CO2 each year – the equivalent of taking over 130,000 petrol cars off the road.
Another project, the 285 MW Lotus Creek facility near Rockhampton, recently completed the laying of the last of its 48-turbine concrete foundations, and started to erect transmission towers and is receiving its first turbine deliveries. CS Energy owns that project but is reportedly seeking a buyer.
