China installed 23.3GW new wind in 2014, nearly double 2013 total

China’s total installed wind energy reached a total of 114.76GW at the end of 2014 after a whopping 23.3GW of new capacity was added for the year, Deutsche Bank reports.

The new figures, released by China’s Wind Energy Association, mark a 45.1 per cent increase in added capacity year-on-year, and a 25.5 per cent increase in the country’s accumulated installed wind power.

According to the NEA, by end-2014, the nation’s cumulative grid-connected wind energy total came to 95.8GW, while 18.7GW of the 23.35GW new capacity added in 2014 was connected to the grid.

Bloomberg New Energy Finance, meanwhile, has reported that China installed 20.7GW of wind in 2014 – an amount that, while lower than WEA’S estimates, still makes it the world’s biggest wind market for the sixth straight year.

BNEF, which uses different methods than the NEA to calculate installation totals, says China currently has 96GW of grid-connected wind capacity.

Driving the growth in installation, the WEA report said Chinese wind turbine supplier Goldwind remained the country’s top-ranked, with 4.43GW, followed by United Power (subsidiary of Guodian Technology & Environment Group (1296 HK)) with 2.6GW and Mingyang (MY US) with 2.06GW.

In addition, Envision installed 1.96GW, Xiangtan Electric (600416 SH) installed 1.78GW, Shanghai Electric (2727 HK /601727 SH) installed 1.74GW, Dongfang Electric (1072 HK/600875 SH) installed 1.3GW while Sinovel (601558 SH) only installed 789MW.

The NEA — an entity under the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) — estimated that China added roughly 14.5GW of grid-connected wind capacity in 2013.
