All 108 Tesla Megapacks delivered, as new big battery takes shape south of Brisbane

Construction of the 200MW/400MWh Greenbank Battery project in Logan, south east Queensland, is “powering ahead” according to developer CS Energy, with all 108 Tesla Megapack 2XL units recently delivered on site.

Queensland government owned generator CS Energy is building the two-hour big battery adjacent to Powerlink’s Greenbank sub-station on the south-side of Brisbane, as part of the state’s “battery blitz” announced following the explosion of the Callide coal generator back in 2021.

In a project update on LinkedIn, Queensland’s department of energy says the delivery of all of the Tesla Megapacks marks a “significant milestone” for the big battery, and keeps it on track to being operational in 2025.

“The batteries will work to alleviate pressure on our grid, balancing our power supply by smoothing out demand peaks and facilitating load shifting,” the post says.

“Aside from delivering grid stability, reliability, and putting downward pressure on energy prices, battery projects like this also deliver jobs and employment opportunities for locals.”

The Greenbank Battery was the state’s biggest when first announced in 2022, but has since been surpassed by a number of projects, namely Neoen’s 270 MW / 540 MWh Western Downs Battery, which started the energisation process in June.

A second stage for the Western Downs project, announced last month, will double its size to 540 MW and 1080 MWh.

“Once operational, the Greenbank Battery will have the capacity to power around 66,000 homes for up to 2 hours before needing to recharge,” the CS Energy post says.

The project employed 60 workers at peak construction, with a further 32 supported as part of Powerlink’s activities.
