Solar and wind hit 100% of demand in W.A.’s grid several times on Sunday morning.
The isolated grid is now a key testbed for high renewables due to rooftop solar growth.
At 9.35am, wind and solar produced 2,650 MW, with bioenergy adding 48 MW.
Net demand was 2,613 MW, while big batteries soaked up 443 MW.
Those batteries let the operator keep essential coal and gas units online for stability.
Renewables reached an 88.7% share of total generation at that moment.
Over the week, renewables supplied 56% of W.A.’s demand, ahead of the eastern grid’s 50%.
Officials note differing definitions of “100% renewables,” especially with no interconnectors in W.A.
Smaller isolated systems already run fully “engines-off,” like Bellevue Gold’s 101-hour record.
W.A. plans to retire coal this decade, leaving gas, batteries and new inverter tech to maintain security.
