Australian EV sales broke records in May

Electric car sales hit a record monthly total of 8,124 in May. In the first half of 2023 more than 30,000 EVs were sold - that's 7% of the new car market.

Tesla Model Y tops charts

The Model Y was the best-selling SUV in Australia, and the third best-selling car overall.  Tesla provided 58% of EV sales.

2023 looks set to be a record-busting year for sales following the 33,000 EVs Australians bought in 2022.

The trend looks set to continue, with more electric car models announced for later in 2023. That includes the more affordable hatchbacks like the MG 4, GWM Ora Cat and potentially even the BYD Dolphin.

The much anticipated fuel efficiency standard - delayed until the end of 2023 - will likely make next year even more significant for the EV market. Until now, Australia has been the only country in the OECD without mandatory fuel efficiency standards for cars.
