Video: Jeff Bezos launches Amazon’s biggest wind farm – from 300 feet

Published by

Global online shopping giant Amazon has powered up its latest, and greatest wind farm yet, with the launch on Thursday of a 253MW project in Scurry County, Texas.

According to Forbes, the company’s latest renewable energy project, which has been built and is owned by Lincoln Clean Energy, secured tax equity from Bank of America Merrill Lynch and GE Energy Financial Services, largely because Amazon is purchasing 90 per cent of its power output.

Indeed, it is just one of more nearly 20 wind and solar farms to have been commissioned by Amazon around the US, as the company – like Apple, Google, Facebook and so many other tech giants – works to meet 100 per cent of its energy needs with renewables.

Amazon has also been installing as much as 41MW of solar on the rooftops of more than 15 “fulfillment” and “sortation” centers across the US this year, and plans to do the same on up to 50 of its facilities globally by 2020. According to MarketWatch, the company has further plans to roll out 35 additional clean-energy projects in the coming years.

This week, however, it is all about the huge new Texas wind farm, that according to Amazon will deliver 1 million MWh of clean energy to the grid annually. And so we leave you with this video, of Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos christening the huge project atop one of its 100 turbines, more than 300 feet in the air. You’re welcome.
