Victoria blows past wind energy output records

Published by

Victoria set a new record for wind energy output on Wednesday evening, as a major weather system blew through the state.

Data from advisors at GPE NemLog2 shows that a new record output of 3,542MW was set at 8.15pm, easily beating the previous mark of 3313MW set in September last year.

At its peak output, wind energy accounted for 58 per cent of Victoria’s demand and sent the wholesale price of electricity down to $8/MWh, although wind’s share grew to 67.6 per cent later in the evening when prices fell below zero for many hours.

Victoria has sourced an average 40 per cent of its electricity demand from renewables in the past 12 months. It aims to lift this to 95 per cent by 2035 as part of its legislated climate targets.
