UK artist plans solar-powered field of light near Uluru

Published by

A UK artist famous for his “field of light” exhibitions has been given permission to take the idea to Uluru, where he plans to use solar-powered LED lighting for his largest project to date.

Bruce Monro plans to install a quarter of a million stems of light over one square kilometer of land surrounding Uluru. They will be using solar illuminators connected by more tan 3,500kms of optic fibre. The tubes of light themselves are more than 160kms long.

The project is costly, so Monro is seeking individual – or group – sponsorships of each tube for £12 each via his ‘Field of Light’ website. So far, he has got 3,088.

“We’re going to be extraordinarily careful, and we’re using 500 LED solar-powered illuminators so that the installation doesn’t waste any power,” he told the Western Press in the UK. “Over time, we hope to raise enough to make this crazy, wonderful dream come true.”

The installation will take 5 weeks to erect and will be in place for around seven months until October, 2013.
