Danish wind energy giant Ørsted has confirmed a wind turbine caught fire at its 583-megawatt (MW) Greater Changhua 4 offshore wind farm in Taiwan, though the exact cause of the fire is unknown and currently under investigation.
Ørsted confirmed reports last week that a fire had broken out at a wind turbine at the Greater Changhua 4 wind farm on August 8. According to the company’s press release, the wind turbine “automatically tripped and ceased operation after its system detected an abnormal condition.”
“Following this, the wind farm team observed a fire on the turbine, and the fire was extinguished shortly after,” Ørsted said. “We can confirm that no personnel were injured in the incident and all relevant authorities and key stakeholders have been notified.”
Safety measures were immediately implemented by the wind farm team, and the turbine was isolated from the transmission system. As of August 21, the turbine remains shut down and isolated even as the rest of the 41 turbines continue to operate normally, while a safety exclusion zone has been established around the turbine as a precaution.
Ørsted and turbine supplier Siemens Gamesa are collaborating on the investigation and repair plan, though at the time of writing the “root cause of this incident remains subject to further investigation.”
First power was first generated at the Greater Changhua 4 offshore wind farm back in July of 2025, with all 42 turbines connected to the Taipower grid in May of this year.
