Video of the Day: Red Bull pilot slaloms around 14 wind turbines

The Red Bull Air Race series has been challenging the nerve and skill of pilots since 2001, putting them through slalom courses consisting of pylons – requiring speed and precision to execute.

The pylons used in these races are inflatable, so as to not cause potentially fatal damage to the planes should they fail to avoid hitting the pylons.

The latest marketing video for the Red Bull Air Race series saw these inflatable pylons replaced with wind turbines, and no, not inflatable wind turbines. These 230-foot wind turbines won’t be as forgiving should a plane going at over 200mph flies into it.

The video shows what would be something more out of a video game then real life, Former Red Bull Air Race world champion Hannes Arch putting puts his life on the line as he weaves in and out of wind turbines in the Austria.

It also looks like something one might try in a flight simulator video game, not in real life. “Every second, you have to be perfectly clear in your mind that you have wind turbines in front of you and need to know precisely what you’re going to do next,” Arch told The Verge.

The next race takes place at nearby Spielberg, Austria next month.
