PRESS RELEASE

Neighbours building power stations together, renters having access to clean energy and families taking control of their electricity supply is the future of Australia’s power industry, the Coalition for Community Energy says.

The growing trend of community power will be explored at a major conference in Melbourne early next year where more than 500 people from across Australia will examine how renewable energy projects owned and run by community groups can clean up and shore up the country’s electricity system.
They’ll hear from Denmark’s Søren Hermansen, a leader in the field who helped make Samso Island the first island in the world to be powered by 100 per cent renewables.
Conference organiser Nicky Ison says Australia is in the midst of a huge energy transition, which comes with huge opportunities and significant challenges.
“More than 80 community energy groups around Australia are developing innovative projects that will increase local energy security, bolster regional development, build community pride and reduce carbon emissions,” Ms Ison said.
“Community power groups can and should play a significant role in modernising Australia’s energy system.”
The 2017 Community Energy Congress will be held in Melbourne on February 27 and 28 with support from a range of organisations including Future Super, Yingli and new retailer Energy Locals. More detail about the conference can be found at: c4ce.net.au/congress
