PRESS RELEASE

  • Geraldton forum looks at renewable hydrogen opportunities .

A McGowan Government-led forum today in Geraldton is examining opportunities to attract clean hydrogen projects to the Mid-West region.

Hydrogen, when produced using renewable energy sources such as solar or wind, is a clean energy option and carbon free fuel that is gaining increasing global interest.

The forum brings together gas, mining, transport, electricity, infrastructure and government sectors to discuss developments in renewable hydrogen and options for encouraging local or national organisations to look to the Mid-West to locate hydrogen pilot projects.

It will cast a spotlight on the inputs required to produce renewable hydrogen such as water, power and land, and celebrate some of the region’s diverse high profile operations.

Participants will hear from Woodside, ATCO, Australian Gas Infrastructure Group, Mid West Ports and Central Earthmoving.

The event is being delivered by the State Government through the Mid West Development Commission.

Comments attributed to Regional Development Minister Alannah MacTiernan:

“Regional Western Australia has incredible potential for renewable energy industries, with its large-scale solar and wind resources and strong export capability.

“The Mid-West in particular delivers on these competitive advantages. This forum aims to bring together key parties to narrow in on initial renewable hydrogen projects for which the region would be well suited.

“Hydrogen can be used to firm renewables for electricity generation or be used directly as a gas in homes and industry.

“This regional forum complements the work being done by the WA Renewable Hydrogen Council, which is expected to deliver its recommendations on the strategic direction of the renewable hydrogen industry in WA early next year.”
