Grid connection contract awarded for small new solar project in NSW

Published by

Australian renewable energy services company Intium says it has been awarded the contract to build, own, operate, and maintain the connection infrastructure for the 32-megawatt (MW) Mulwala solar project in southern New South Wales (NSW).

Intium was founded in 2023 and is a subsidiary of Essential Energy, which operates the distributed network (poles and wires) that covers most of NSW.

It provides a range of energy solutions including network connections, electric vehicle charging infrastructure, and electrification, was awarded the build, own, operate, and maintain (BOOM) contract by Mulwala owner European Energy Australia.

It has previously won a similar contract with the Forest Glen solar project near Dubbo in the central west of the state,

The Mulwala project, located approximately two kilometres north of the town of Mulwala in the Riverina district, is expected to be operational in 2026. On site construction is expected to begin in October.

Intium will deliver the full connection scope for the project including the design, procurement, installation, testing, and commissioning of a 22kV switching station, as well as a two-kilometre underground cable linking the solar farm to Essential Energy’s Mulwala Zone Substation.

“This is a significant milestone for Intium and Australia’s transition to renewable energy,” said Babu Kumar, general manager for engineering & delivery at Intium.

“It reflects the confidence our clients have in our ability to deliver technically complex infrastructure with agility and precision.

“We worked collaboratively with European Energy to develop a financially viable solution through a transparent process and led key aspects of the planning approvals. This has enabled the project to move at speed, with confidence, and in the spirit of a true partnership.”
