GreatWall Power energy storage products to help bar-headed geese protection at the source of Yangtze River

The development of energy storage technology not only plays an important role in energy saving and emission reduction, but also do jobs in wildlife protection in remote areas.

At the head of mysterious Yangtze River, there is the highest flying bird in the world. Bar-headed wild geese, also named as Anser indicus, live in Chinese Yunnan province, India and other regions in winter. In March and April each year, they leave the southern area and fly to the salt-water lake in the plateau of western China to breed.

The geese have to fly over the Himalayas during the migration. On April 22, volunteers from the Chinese environmental protection organizations started Bar-headed Geese Protection Project 2018 near the Bande Lake of Tuotuo River, which is the source of Yangtze River. The survey showed that the number of bar-headed geese arrived at Bande Lake this year has doubled.

Before this year, the bar-headed geese protection project acquired electric power from off-grid solar panels. At night or when the weather was bad, all equipment was not available for power. In April of this year, a 10 kW hybrid energy storage converter provided by China GreatWall Technology Power Supply Division and the energy storage battery provided by a battery manufacturer were installed at the project site.

When sunlight is sufficient, photovoltaic power generation supplies the load, excess electric energy is stored in the energy storage system to ensure that the load can operate normally even when the weather is bad, and the PV self-consume rate is greatly improved.

The bar-headed geese protection project was live broadcast by 10 HD cameras. From April 22 to June 5, the live broadcast lasted 45 days and it took no less than 2 hours a day to witness the love story of bar-headed geese migrating to the source of the Yangtze River: landing, feeding, mating, hatching, geese baby shelling…

The site of the project is located in the hinterland of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. It belongs to the control zone of the upper-level westerly wind zone. It is about 5,000 meters above sea level. The temperature is -4.2°C and the extreme minimum is -33.8°C. In response to the harsh environment, this project adopts highly reliable GreatWall Hybrid HSTR10 PV-ES converter as the core of the entire system.

It is an integrated design of photovoltaic and energy storage, and keeping it in a harsh natural environment. Stable work ensures that the camera can rely on the normal operation of the energy storage system regardless of the weather conditions.
