With the Coalition leadership under pressure from within and without to scrap or dilute the renewable energy target, it is probably worth noting exactly where Australia fits into the world of renewable energy policies. It turns out that 138 countries have renewable energy targets, and that does not include individual targets introduced by states, provinces and city governors.
According to the recent Ren21 report, compiled by a group of national governments, international agencies, NGOs and academics, most renewable energy targets are supported by feed-in-tariffs (FITs) and renewable portfolio standards (RPS). Some countries 0 such as the US, China and much of the EU, have 10 or more such policies. Australia has around 6-8, according to this estimate.
