Germany’s BayWa enters Australian solar PV market through Solarmatrix buy

BayWa renewable energy has entered the Australian solar market through the acquisition of local wholesaler and developer Solarmatrix. BayWa r.e. said the move is a continuation of its expansion into the southern hemisphere.

With its robust rooftop market, a diverse offgrid sector and a utility scale segment  heading towards major expansion, the Australian solar PV landscape is attracting new players. Munich-based BayWa r.e. is the latest international entrant to the market, having acquired local company Solarmatrix.

Solarmatrix is based in the Western Australian state capital Perth, and is well established as an off and on grid project developer and distributor. Solarmatrix has strong ties to Germany, with a number of its eight-strong team hailing from the pioneering solar country.

Company Managing Director Durmus Yildiz is from Germany, and he will stay on to run the new company BayWa r.e. Solar Systems Pty Ltd. Solarmatrix has supplied and deployed German-made solar components from key suppliers such as SolarWorld and SMA for a number of years.

“After entering the market in South East Asia a good half year ago, we now continue our international growth strategy in the Southern hemisphere,” said BayWa AG CEO Klaus Jose Lutz. The CEO indicated that the company hopes to expand the former Solarmatrix team’s market share.

Solarmatrix has developed a range of C&I rooftop projects in Australia, both in urban and more rural settings. It has also built up considerable expertise and experience in designing, supplying and installing offgrid solar+storage arrays to remote indigenous communities – often in extremely testing environments.

The new BayWa r.e. Solar Systems will exhibit at the forthcoming All Energy trade show in Melbourne on October 4 and 5. BayWa is active in solar markets as a project developer, EPC, O&M provider and wholesaler.
