Canberra homes battle to be energy champions

ACT homes with solar and batteries are taking energy saving to the next level by competing with their neighbours to be named Canberra’s super solar heroes thanks to a new website by Reposit Power and SolarHub.

Today saw the launch of Leaderboard the brainchild of Reposit Power and SolarHub that ranks solar battery customers on their solar production and consumption.

The site is an initiative of the Government’s NextGen program which provides subsidies to home owners in the ACT to purchase solar batteries.

Reposit Power CEO Dean Spaccavento said Leaderboard provides customers with insights into how their household is performing and helps drive behavioural change when installing smart solar battery systems.

“Everybody likes a bit of healthy competition, with Canberra positioning itself as a global leader in renewable energy innovation, Leaderboard encourages residents to be more aware about the energy they’re using and where it’s coming from,” Mr Spaccavento said.

SolarHub Director Benn Masters said installing a battery system is the best way to maximise the use of solar energy but there are also savings to be made from making small changes to how energy is used in the home and some households do this better than others.

“By presenting households with information on how much energy they are using relative to their peers we are likely to see a reduction in overall energy consumption. What better way to do this than with a fun yet informative leaderboard!”, Mr Masters said.

Leaderboard ranks customers based on how much of their daily energy came from solar and how much solar they stored or consumed. Each customer has a unique username and password so they can check in daily to compare their household’s performance.

The ACT Government’s Next Generation Storage Grants program aims to facilitate the uptake of battery storage in the ACT. The program will support the roll-out of around 36MW of distributed battery storage in more than 5000 homes and businesses by 2020. This is one of the largest roll-outs of distributed solar battery storage technology in the world.

The ACT Government is collecting data from each battery installed under the program. Data collected is being used for research purposes and to help position Canberra as a global leader in renewable energy innovation.
