Businesses rewarded for clean energy push

Twenty businesses across the state will share in $200,000 of NSW Government funding as part of a program to help companies adopt renewable energy and be more energy efficient.

Energy and Utilities Minister Don Harwin said the businesses will receive $10,000 each for advisory services under the Government’s Clean Energy Strategies for Business program.
 
“The NSW Government recognises the instrumental role businesses will play in driving the economy towards our 2050 target of net-zero emissions,” Mr Harwin said.   
 
“This fantastic program supports businesses, large and small, that are committed to achieving significant clean energy targets and much lower emissions. 
 
“Regional businesses will play a big part in this journey, with more than half the successful applicants for this funding based in regional NSW.”
 
Some of the organisations to receive funding include Gundagai Meat Processors, Stone & Wood Brewing Co in Byron Bay and Charles Sturt University in Bathurst.
 
Environment Minister Gabrielle Upton said the work would be shared with the business community to help the state move towards a cleaner future.
 
“We’re supporting these businesses to help them explore how to transition to clean energy and create a competitive advantage,” Ms Upton said.
 
“Commercial and industrial energy use accounts for around 45 per cent of total consumption in NSW so helping companies reduce their energy use and explore renewable energy sources is critical to keep downward pressure on bills in the long term.”
 
The Clean Energy Strategies for Business project is a joint initiative of the NSW Department of Industry and the NSW Office of Environment and Heritage. 
 
The project is expected to be completed by the second half of 2017.
