Brisbane Markets to install record 1.06MW rooftop solar system

Australia’s largest privately owned rooftop solar system is set to be installed on Queensland’s Brisbane Markets, after the 1.06MW project was confirmed on Monday.

Brisbane Markets chief Andrew Young revealed that the pilot project would be installed by Todae Solar, after the Sydney-based company won the competitive tender for the job, conducted through Solar Choice.

Construction of the system is expected to commence early in 2015, and on completion will be one of the top 10 largest installed across the country, comprising 3350 Jinko Solar 315w modules.

“Brisbane Markets Limited has been looking at alternative energy sources to reduce our dependence on grid electricity and our exposure to the massive cost escalations we have seen in recent years,” said Young.

“We do believe that solar power will be a key part of the future electricity mix and… that ultimately, we will have a significant portion of our energy generated from our own rooftop solar installations.

“Given the current energy landscape, we decided to initiate this pilot project to show our leadership within the local and wider communities.”

Todae Solar – one of Australia’s leading commercial solar installers  – says the BML project is an important milestone in the development of the commercial solar sector in Australia.

The tender follows news that the South Australian government is looking for bids for a rooftop system of up to 3.5MW on an old Mitsubishi factory, and now a new technology park, in Adelaide.
