Big Tesla battery to provide back-up for trains in Japan

Tesla says it has completed the installation of its largest battery storage project in Asia to date, a 4.2MW/7MWh project using 42 of its Powerpack battery storage units to provide emergency backup power for a Kintetsu train line in Osaka, Japan.

The Osaka Powerpack installation is intended to provide emergency backup power – in the event of a power outage – and to move a train and its passengers to the nearest train station. The 42 Powerpack battery system is also intended to help reduce energy demand on the Osaka electricity grid during peak hours.

The total installation is said to have taken only two days since the company’s arrival on-site and it is the largest installed Tesla battery project in Asia and the company’s fourth project in the Asia Pacific region.

According to various reports, the Osaka Powerpack installation can provide electricity for trains to be able to operate for up to 30 minutes. The installation began operation on Monday.
