Andrew Forrest’s Squadron Energy has presented another large wind farm and battery project to the federal government for environmental approval, this one located around 30 kms west of Yass in southern NSW.
The Bookham wind farm – near the village of the same name – proposes up to 99 turbines and a total capacity of 594 megawatts, and will be supported by a big battery sized at up to 250 MW and 1,000 MWh.
Squadron hopes to connect to the grid either through existing 330 kV and 132 kV transmission lines, or via the proposed 500 kV HumeLink transmission line that is also expected to go through the region.
It says it has reached out to Transgrid about a connection to HumeLink, but has been told that the transmission company is not conducting any such discussions at the moment.
The Bookham project is part of the planned 14 GW of projects that Squadron wants to bring to fruition in the country’s main grid over the next decade, following the purchase of the existing and pipeline assets of CWP.
It has recently opened the nearby Bango wind farm, and is currently commissioning the Clarke Creek wind farm in Queensland.
It also has approval for the Spicers Creek wind project in the central west of NSW, which recently won EPBC approval and was included in a list of priority projects by the federal government, along with Squadron’s Moreten Hill wind project in Victoria.
The Bookham project was formally unveiled late last year, although it has been discussed with the local community for several years. It has still to work through the state planning process, but has also joined the queue for federal approval under the EPBC Act.
It will be built on mostly cleared pasture and grazing land.
