Energy Insiders Podcast: An audience with the Rottnest wind turbine

Rottnest Wind Turbine

Rottnest wind turbine is not a big turbine, it is only 600kW, and it is not part of a bigger solar farm. In fact, it stands alone off the coast of Perth, but its influence goes far beyond Perth’s holiday playground.

It was the Rottnest wind turbine that turned former prime minister Tony Abbott against wind energy. Abbott, in explaining why he didn’t like wind energy, cited the fact that he once rode past the turbine on a bicycling trip.

We visit the turbine – sadly not spinning because of a circuit board failure the day before – and find out what the fuss is all about, and what drove someone to set up a Twitter account for this solitary turbine. And to discuss this, we are joined by Louis Kent, from the Australian Institute of Energy during a field trip to study the hybrid renewable facility on Rottnest.
