Victoria councils taking action for greener vehicle fleets

PRESS RELEASE

Minister for Local Government Natalie Hutchins has announced $33,200 for a program led by Nillumbik Shire Council to develop a plan for more environmentally friendly vehicle fleets.

Nillumbik received the funding to work with Darebin City, Manningham City, Moreland City and Yarra City councils to conduct a feasibility study to assess how emissions from their extensive vehicle fleets can be reduced.

The group will investigate how taking action to ensure vehicles in their fleets are the right size and type for their task and how they can reduce environmental impacts by limiting emissions and reducing the need for travel. This announcement is part of the Andrews Labor Government’s Collaborative Council– Sustainability Fund Partnerships program.

In order to receive funds from the programs Councils must collaborate on projects that will improve their environmental sustainability.

Earlier projects have shown that communities benefit from the program including the initiative of a group of eastern councils which will now enable the installation of 1,000 solar PV on low-income and vulnerable households.
